It's okay to HIIT* pause

Sometimes the universe is just telling you ‘nope’. A big fat nope manifested itself today when I attempted to set off to my usual Monday morning workout class. My car battery was completely flat, my sister (who does the morning class with me) only got my message one minute before the class started so she couldn’t pick me up along the way and I’d left it too late to walk or get a taxi to the gym. I thought about staying up and going a jog round the block a couple of times but the icy ground and risk of falling and damaging my knee (or falling on my arse) was also screaming naw Abi. Some of you might be reading this thinking ‘So?? Free pass from the universe, back to bed ye pop’ but I really was gutted. I love my early morning workouts- I feel they set me up for the day and it means I can come home after work and veg out in front of the TV guilt free. But alas, (who even says that? Me apparently) I went back to bed and opted to walk to work instead. A pang of guilt came over me as I had to part with my usual routine, before I told myself that missing one class wasn’t the be-all and end-all of my fitness journey. Missing one class wasn’t going to make me pile on the pounds again or strip me of the cardio level I’ve built up over months (or hope I have). Sometimes a break in routine and switching things up is a good thing. Sometimes exercise isn’t always ‘caning it’ at the gym. Exercise is simply moving. And if that means a 25 minute walk to work then that’s 25 minutes more than doing nothing. You shouldn’t feel guilty for taking a break, slowing down or even just resting. It’s all part of the journey. Plus it was a frosty -3 degrees this morning so the shivering while walking to work probs burned half a crust of the pizza I had last night. (It’s all about balance okay, don’t judge me).

Speak soon, Wee Eb
