To Anna, the inventor of afternoon tea

Updated: Jun 26, 2021

The whole concept of afternoon tea fascinates me and made me want to find out who created it- so I could personally thank them for introducing me to my now favourite pastime. But I didn’t realise just how far back this cultural custom would go.

Afternoon tea was introduced in the 19th century as a solution to quell that ‘sinking feeling’ experienced by Anna Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford. At this time it was custom to only have two meals a day; breakfast and dinner at around 8pm. (8pm?! No wonder the poor girl was complaining). Her answer to her rumbling stomach was a pot of tea and a light snack taken in private. Anna soon after began inviting friends round to join her; others cottoned on to this and the practice was soon acceptable to enjoy in ones drawing room. Fast forward hundreds of years later and afternoon tea is now considered a luxury enjoyed in public by the public.

Perhaps Anna contributed to one of Britain’s main cultural heritages as it has long been regarded that we love our tea. There’s something about a cuppa that helps us unwind and relax. And there’s something notably special about drinking it from a vintage tea cup. Perhaps afternoon tea brings us back to our roots; drinking and eating with friends or family- our heritage.

Afternoon tea has long been regarded as one of my family’s favourite pastimes. And yes you come away with your belly full and sweet tooth cravings cured, but you also take away a lot more. You leave the experience with memories, laughter and stories to tell. Afternoon tea has a way of bringing others together, and that for me is the highlight. So here’s to Anna, who could have fixed her problem quietly and in the privacy of her boudoir, but chose to celebrate amongst friends and family because she knew it added to the experience.

Cheers Anna!
